Bayanihan Community Centre

In Tagalog, the word bayanihan means community spirit. Since 2001, The Bayanihan Community Centre in Victoria, British Columbia, has worked to preserve, celebrate, and highlight Filipino culture and traditions, while also serving the local community. My family has been active in the organization since moving from the Philippines to Canada — it’s where I learned Filipino dances like the tinikling, and have eaten (probably) hundreds of lumpia made in their kitchen.

As a volunteer, I created graphics using typography inspired by Filipino sign makers and the colors of the Philippines’ national flag. I made a simplified alternative logo drawn from the hand-lettered original. I loved giving back to an organization that has provided so much to me, my family and the community.
